Huon Valley – The Kermandie Waterfront Hotel
– Dover Township –
Dover is a small town within Tasmania’s Far South, located on the shores of Port Esperance.
It’s located about 1.5 hours south of Hobart, and serviced by public transport buses.
The town consists of small intersecting residential streets, with a scattering of shops and businesses including a super market, mechanic and service station.
Popular pass times in the area include fishing and sailing within Australia’s southernmost sailing club.
The town of Dover is a picturesque 80 KM drive from Hobart. It’s recognized as the most Southernmost town of significance in Australia.
Historically Dover has been an industry focused town with a reliance on fishing and freighting timber by sea.
Although some signs of the timber, salmon, abalone and crayfish industry remain, today Dover has become known as a quaint sleepy town frequented by tourists in the summer.
Things To Do
Dover is a handy place to pick up some groceries and refuel the car before journeying on.
There is also a nice dog friendly foreshore walk along Kent Beach Road with public toilets, playground and picnic tables facing onto the beach.
The water is generally calm and shallow making it great for young ones to have a paddle while mum and dad relax nearby.
The Bake House Distillery is worth a visit where you can taste some local spirits and grab some woodfired sourdough if you are lucky.
Finally, the Dover Museum features exhibits of Dover’s heyday between the 1840’s and 1940’s. The artwork and pottery of local artists is also displayed and available for sale. Open Saturday to Monday in summer and Sunday’s only in winter.
